St George's Day Celebration Ideas!

19/04/2017

On the 23rd April, English folks up and down the country will be celebrating St. George’s Day but who is he and why do we honour him?

Legend tells it that St George was a soldier in the Roman army who slayed a dragon to free a princess who had been given as a human sacrifice by the people of Silene so that they could have access to a Water Well closely guarded by the dragon. Despite being a total hero, St. Geroge was later executed on 23rd April due to his Christian religion.

St. George was actually of Turkish descent but due to his Christian martyr, in 1415 he was honoured as the Patron Saint of England and a national feast day and holiday was declared (which became almost as popular as Christmas!). Although he still represents a symbol of this fine country with the red and white flag, St George’s Day is no longer a national holiday but is still observed and celebrated by many...And we love an excuse for a party!

To help you along with your St George’s Day celebrations this month ‘The English Original’ from the English Whisky Company is our Whisky of the Month throughout April. Launched in 2016, this new bottling from the Norfolk based distillery is superb. Aged to perfection in specially selected Bourbon casks, this unpeated single malt is incredibly easy drinking with hints of vanilla and tropical fruits on the nose complimented by a nutty malty palate that leads to a drying finish.

We are also taking the celebrations one step further… this weekend (22nd and 23rd April) we are offering 10% off all remaining ‘Chapters’ within The English Whisky Company’s range at our Ironbridge store! You need no further encouragement to join in the celebrations this April!
